Rob Sturgess Photography

With 5 decades of experience, going back well into the film days, it’s still about capturing the feeling of the shot, remembering that those emotions may last only a fraction of a second. Still excited about every aspect of the imaging process. My journey started with the traditions of B&W shooting, printing & processing and now many years later continues while embracing the latest digital equipment and processing.

My interests range from back ally street shooting to corporate boardrooms and offices. It’s about people and the beauty of nature and the excitement of creating.
It’s about streets, style and challenges, day or night, but MOSTLY it’s the ongoing luxury of LEARNING.

Feature Story early summer 2023- Palouse Washington

Farmland mosaics

The towering windmills of Palouse stand guard over the 1000’s of acres of wheat and canola fields. Photographed from the most popular 3600 foot high vantage point Steptoe Butte.

Contours, colors and vast skies of Eastern Washington and Idaho farm lands.

In the early growing season of May and June the fields are a carpet of vibrant green with precise tractor lines from the local farmers who have been cultivating this area for generations.

Lone barn surrounded by 10’s of 1000’s of acres of rolling hills in this vast farmland in Palouse. This area in Washington is the largest wheat producing area in all of the US.

On October 22 at the Vancouver Art Gallery there was another rally, protest and march through the streets of Vancouver (simultaneously with other major cities of the world) to support the citizens of Iran and to protest the unwarranted persecution and death of young 22-year-old Mahsa Amini at the hands of the Islamic Republic’s evil morality police. As the organizer loudly shouted out MAHSA AMINI, WOMENLIFEFREEDOM, STANDTOGETHER. This was NOT a protest, but a revolution. It was a powerful event with no shortage of anger, commitment, and passion by many in the crowd. I felt I needed to stand shoulder to shoulder with the crowd to support.. The world needs to unite and stand together in support of all citizens of Iran and in particular the women who have little or no rights. Here are just a few of the 200 shots taken.

A true emcee using words to inform and empower.

A favorite assignment of mine was photographing talented spoken word artist, writer and rapper Kevin Frost. Kevin (better known as Emcee K-Ski) uses his passionate power of words, music and beat to inspire and to educate and connect to a new generation of listeners, promoting justice, equality and a deeper meaning of life to all. It was my privilege to spend time with Kevin https://soundcloud.com/mista-ock to be able to capture this. IG: @emceekskiSome of my favorites shots are here below.

I just wanted to say thank you for the awesome photos, I love them. I have had nothing but positive feedback from people who have seen the shots. I can’t wait to start using some of these for marketing and promotion of my projects as well as using some on my website. Thank you so much for doing this...I had fun and enjoyed learning about lighting and angles. I have already started referring you to people I know.

I have been photographing Kevin Frost, a talented rap/hip hop artist ( aka EMCEE K SKI) coming up to 2 years now. He is one of my favorite clients. Working with Kevin, developing marketing/press material that he is using to promote his music business which spans over 30 years, has been a creative process for the both of us. Collaborating on headshots, web content shots, promotional shots and photographs of his last live concert, (which was held at Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical garden in Vancouver in early June), is where we are at, with more to come.

Along with his solo career of many decades, Kevin has been working with singer, songwriter and guitarist Maxi Theophile Talbot, collaborating on Volume 2 of Beats, Blues and bars. Individually and together these guys ROCK.

So let me introduce you to Justin and Shain. These brothers originally from New Brunswick, hired me to do some portraits that were destined for their Mom back home in NB. It had been a long time since they had any pictures of themselves, so the time was right for an update. Things started off as you could imagine with smiles and some nice poses, but escalated to what brothers do best, some serious shenanigans. Thanks guys this shoot was a BLAST!
